Leah was the first thing Rhonda saw when she opened her eyes. She reached out her hand and pulled Leah close.
âGood morning, darlinâ,â she said.
Leah bent to kiss her cheek. âDickie Darling has been to see me,â she said.
âDickie? What did he want?â
âHe asked me if I had an antique gun.â
Rhonda sat up and reached for her coffee. âWhat did you tell him?â
âThat I did not have an antique gun.â
Rhonda sipped the coffee and sat back. âDonât worry,â Rhonda said. âWeâre safe. There is no antique gun.â She looked into Leahâs eyes, her own wide and unblinking. Then she smiled.
Leah looked at her over the rim of her cup. âMy daughter is on Fletcherâs case, a âcoldâ case she calls it. Sheâll solve it. Sheâs incredibly good at what she does.â
âYes, sheâs been to see me.â
Now it was Leahâs turn to raise her eyebrows. âAnd?â
Rhonda put her cup down and brought Leah back into her arms. âItâs all going to be perfectly fine. It canât be solved. Witnesses?â
Leah shrugged her shoulders. They sat sipping their coffee for a while and then Leah moved to the chair opposite the bed.
âHeâs still in love with me, you know.â
âWho is still in love with you? Certainly not Walter.â
Leah laughed. âNo, Dickie Darling.â
âOh, the cross-dresser, your old beau.â
âVery old beau, but I think he believes heâs protecting me from something.â
Rhonda put her coffee down and stretched out her arms. âGood. He owes you for never blabbing about his idiosyncrasies to anyone.â
âExcept you.â Leah smiled. âOh, yes, and Ginger.â
âI wish we could live together and to hell with rumor and conjecture. Itâs as if we were ugly. Just two poor celibate creatures who canât attract men.â
Leah stood up and returned to the bed. âWe could live together if we moved somewhere else, where no one knows us, where no one would murder us for being queer as frost flowers.â
Rhonda laughed and took her hand. âWe have Charleston.â
âWe donât live in Charleston,â Leah said. âWe just visit there. I want to live somewhere together.â
âWe have set up a house in Charleston.â
âThe whole town thinks weâre gay, Iâm sure.â
âThey donât even know what the word means, except in terms of âhappy.â So, they think weâre happy, do they?â
Leahâs eyes were sad, filmy the way they got when she was about to cry. She looked away.
âLeah, I canât sell this house,â Rhonda said. âItâs my history. Charleston will have to do. We have a life there, be it part-time or not, itâs still a life.ââ
âIâm not asking you to sell this house, but we could let someone live in it. Let Grayson have it.â
Rhonda laughed. âI would like nothing more than to give this house to Grayson so her family could get out of that rickety old shack they live in, but the historical society of the Southâs most historic homes would have me murdered. They would kill me if I let a family of Negros live in one of the Southâs most coveted historical plantations.â
Leah laughed. âYou can afford to keep it maintained and we could live somewhere else.
